The fear and greed index has made a sharp leap into the "greed" zone: what is behind the surge

Sentiment in the crypto market has changed dramatically over the past 24 hours. The Fear and Greed Index has surged by 16 points — from 46 to 62 — breaking into the "greed" zone. This is one of the most aggressive reversals in emotional sentiment we have observed in 2026.

The main catalyst for such a sharp turnaround was Bitcoin. The leading cryptocurrency gained 11.7% in 24 hours, approaching the $71,850 mark. Meanwhile, altcoins showed even more impressive momentum, further amplifying overall optimism.

Drivers Behind the Index Rise

The index calculation methodology is based on five key indicators, with volatility and market momentum carrying the largest weight — 25% each. These two components sharply shifted direction as prices moved upward, triggering such a significant change in the final reading.

Ethereum led the rally among major assets, surging 19.6% to $2,285. Solana gained 13.25%, while XRP rose 14.3%. Bitcoin's market capitalization, meanwhile, climbed to $1.44 trillion.

The index scale ranges from zero to 100. Values above 50 are traditionally classified as "greed," while levels around 25 and below are considered "extreme fear." The current reading is the highest in the past 30 days. Investor surveys and Bitcoin's market share carry less weight in the calculation but also confirm the shift in sentiment.

The sharp price surge triggered a wave of short-position liquidations. Traders betting on declines were forced to urgently close positions, buying assets at higher prices. The volume of forced short closures amounted to roughly $1.23 billion, which only added fuel to the rally.

Social media activity and Google search queries, which together account for another quarter of the index's weight, also spiked sharply after such price surges. This suggests the indicator could continue moving higher before the market begins to cool.

Why the Sentiment Shift Should Be Treated with Caution

It is important to keep the context in mind. Just a week ago, the index stood at 29, and a month ago at 25 — deep in the "extreme fear" zone. Throughout July and early August, it barely rose above 35. However, liquidity did not return as quickly as market participants' emotions.

Stablecoin reserves on exchanges have declined by roughly 20%, indicating a reduction in available capital that could cushion a potential downturn. Contrarian traders are closely watching the extremes. In late June, Fundstrat's head of research Tom Lee noted that sentiment in the crypto sector had fallen below levels seen after the FTX collapse. At the time, signals of maximum fear seemed premature, but now they look more prescient than mistaken.

Other traders prefer to focus not on emotions but on market structure. Bitcoin's dominance has been testing a support level since July, which is why the debate over an altcoin season remains open. Unlike sentiment indicators, this signal has barely moved.

Leverage cuts both ways. Short liquidations pushed prices higher, but now there are fewer sellers left to squeeze. A single calm session could quickly dampen both volatility and momentum.

One day of greed by itself proves nothing. However, the index rarely shifts by 16 points without continuation in one direction or the other. The coming days will show whether buyers remain in control or fear returns to the market at the same speed.

My take: such vertical moves in the index are a classic sign of emotional market overload, not a sustainable trend. Until we see confirmation of rising volumes and stabilization of stablecoin reserves, this rally should be treated as a powerful but potentially vulnerable bounce.
