AI has upended the memory economy: Micron's CEO announced a structural shift
The semiconductor memory market is entering a new era, and this is no longer just another cyclical turn. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, speaking at the site of the under-construction plant in Boise, Idaho, declared a fundamental shift in the industry's economics. According to him, artificial intelligence has transformed memory from a run-of-the-mill commodity into a strategic resource that determines the performance of the entire AI infrastructure.
Why memory has become infrastructure
Traditionally, memory production followed a classic cycle: a surge in demand prompted capacity expansion, followed by oversupply and price collapses. However, as Mehrotra emphasizes, this model is breaking down with the advent of AI. Modern AI-based systems require not just "more chips," but highly specialized solutions tightly integrated with specific processors and architectures.
Supplier selection is no longer reduced to the lowest price per gigabyte. Customers are forced to consider compatibility, energy efficiency, and bandwidth, which fundamentally changes the negotiating positions of both sides. "I call memory the strategic infrastructure of the AI era," Mehrotra stated. "Today, it is impossible to imagine AI without memory. AI-based systems require more and more memory."
The numbers confirm the turning point
Micron's financial results vividly illustrate this shift. Revenue for the third fiscal quarter soared to $41.46 billion, compared to just $9.30 billion a year earlier. Gross margin reached 84.6%, up from 37.7% in the same period last year, and the company forecasts reaching around 86% in the current quarter.
The main challenge now is production capacity. Mehrotra admitted that factories cannot keep up with demand: data centers alone require approximately 50% more chips than Micron can currently produce. The company's plans include $250 billion in investments in manufacturing and research within the United States, including the construction of two new plants.
Further demand growth, according to Micron's management, will be driven by autonomous vehicle manufacturers, robotics, and AI-enabled home appliances. However, not everyone shares this optimism. In June, a lawsuit was filed against Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix alleging collusion and price inflation for DRAM memory. Chinese manufacturers, such as CXMT, are also ramping up output, which could bring back the price competition that, as Mehrotra claims, the industry has moved away from thanks to AI.
My take: Mehrotra's statements are not just corporate optimism, but a reflection of a real structural transformation. However, it is worth remembering that high margins always attract new players and regulatory attention. The question is how long this "golden age" will last and whether the expansion of Chinese manufacturers will be the very factor that brings cyclicality back to the industry.
